FRACTION OF A SECOND:
EVENT HORIZON (Part 1 of 3)

by Austin Herder

Change is inevitable. Most of us spend our lives planning for the future, but changes in plans are a certainty. This is the lesson that must be learned by the heroes in Fraction of a Second. Karen and her fiancee have plans. But they become part of an event horizon – an observable boundary in space and time. Most event horizons result in an explosion and a black hole in the universe.

Having hit against an unexpected event horizon, Karen and her fiancee are at the center of a larger plan to make it to the rebel fortress known as Liberty Valley... but they must reach the safety of the fortress to safeguard the plans. Unexpected obstacles and constant changes may force them to abandon hope. One never knows what could happen in the fraction of a second.

Austin Herder weaves a masterful tale of suspense in this rather intense story. Through his unique writing style, Austin helps us understand the thoughts and feelings of the main characters – and he does it by feeding us the thoughts and feelings of one character. The acclaimed author of I Believe continues his short story writing with this message of the necessity for flexibility. This particular story won the South Carolina Fine Arts Competition in the Short Story category.
